Man found shot in pickup

Shattered glass was all that remained at the scene yesterday morning, after an apparent gangland hit in North Vancouver.

A man in his 20s was found slumped over in the front seat of a pickup truck on Saturday night after police were called to the 600-block Queens Road West around 11:15.

The fatal shooting, which happened in the parking lot of the Delbrook Recreation Centre, had all the indicators of being a targeted hit, police said yesterday.

Arizona's film industry shows signs of growth

A new TV show will be using the streets of downtown Phoenix as a stand-in for Los Angeles over the next few weeks, but it wasn't the architecture or the weather that drew it here. The show's producers came for Arizona's entertainment-industry tax incentives, and they're not the only people looking east from Hollywood toward Arizona. TV and film productions spent an estimated $208 million in Arizona in 2007, and 2008 may be an even bigger year. .

Agencies Must Gird Themselves For a Recession

The key element to cutback management is to be ahead of the curve. Often, boards and professional managers live in denial for as long as possible. The consequence of delay is deeper cuts in service and trauma to organizations.

These are the moments when boards of directors and CEOs have the unique responsibility of stewardship and the preservation of community assets through perilous times. There are some specific steps that all organizational boards should consider.

First, monitor budgets more closely. Create a financial dashboard. Compare accounts payable, both the amount and its aging, on a historical basis. Understand the revenue sources and filter projections against changed realities.

Second, use the organization's mission as a measure against which to look at all programs.

Latino leader upset over change in political tide

We're here to voice an opinion to our legislators and the whole state of South Carolina to please touch your hearts and reconsider these laws," Salazar, president of the Latino Association of Charleston, said Tuesday in the Statehouse lobby.

She brought about a dozen immigrants, several of whom did not speak English, to weigh in on pending state legislation on the matter.

Microsoft Researcher Jim Gray Receives Turing Award for Helping to ...

"The original question, 'Can machines think?' I believe to be too meaningless to deserve discussion. Nevertheless, I believe that at the end of the century the use of words and general educated opinion will have altered so much that one will be able to speak of machines thinking without expecting to be contradicted." Alan M. Turing, 1950

SAN FRANCISCO, May 14, 1999 — Fifty years ago, British mathematician Alan M. Turing predicted that by the turn of the century, computers would be able to "think." To measure this, he devised a simple test. Put a person and a computer in one room, and a judge in another, and have the judge ask the computer and the person questions using only a keyboard. If 30 percent of the time the judge can't tell the difference between human and computer, the machine must be somewhat intelligent.
