Invasive Species of Oregon series

It has to be everybody aware of this issue if we are going to be able to maintain the environment we know and love here in Oregon.

Q: Why is the issue of invasive species so important in Oregon?

A: What's happened in the past couple of decades is that the rate of introduction of new species has skyrocketed. It's an exponential curve, and it mirrors the rate of change in trade and travel. It is a by-product of trade and travel. In the past couple of decades, our programs have been racing to keep up with all of these new introductions.

And it's not just Oregon; it's national, and it's actually worldwide. Things that we consider native here are a problem in other parts of the world. There is just a worldwide recognition that invasive species are important.

They are especially important in this state because our environment is actually in fairly good shape.

Carers' cash cuts utterly callous: Abbott

The Federal Opposition has accused the Federal Government of making carers bear the brunt of its mission to cut spending.

Carers can receive a utilities allowance from the Federal Government of $500 a year but the former bonus scheme of $1,600 looks likely to be abandoned as Kevin Rudd's 'razor gang' goes to work to curb public spending.

Opposition community services spokesman Tony Abbott says carers will be out of pocket and should feel betrayed.

"It is utterly callous to be making the most vulnerable people in our community bear the brunt of the fight against inflation," he said.

Joan Hughes from Carers Australia says more than 400,000 carers would be affected.

"Carers are already doing it really tough," she said. "This is a complete shock to Carers Australia."

Ms Hughes says she is pushing for wider changes to boost support for carers.

Police Seek White, Thin Man In Killing

The man, whom police have called a "person of interest" but not a suspect, was seen by neighborhood residents about the time of the killing Monday on Madison's South Side.

Police spokesman Joel DeSpain on Friday said detectives now are comfortable describing the man as white and having a thin build. Before Friday, police hadn't released a race for the man, because of conflicting witness reports, or an estimated weight or body shape.

The man also was said to be about 6 feet tall and was last seen carrying a new-looking, bluish-gray backpack and wearing a white knit cap with a red W on it. He was described as wearing a tan, sheepskin-type jacket, though police aren't sure if it had a hood or not.

Not your average student-athlete

Their brief story was supposed to end here, with Johnson presumably finding another instructor at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz. and Prudomme beginning to assemble his first team at Grand Canyon University, yet somehow Johnson's insistence on having Prudhomme as her instructor and his need to recruit the best tennis players in the area led them back to each other.

It was a math problem that even Johnson wasn't sure that she could solve.

"There was obviously a huge age difference, I hadn't played competitively in 30 years and was out of college for just as long," says Johnson, who graduated from Arizona State with a master's degree in secondary education. "I wasn't sure if I could go back but I thought it would be fun find out."

If Prudhomme had been hired at any other time by any other school, Johnson would likely be serving volleys with her fellow retirees at the tennis club, but he was hired by Grand Canyon, an NCAA Division II program that had gone winless the previous season, a month before the school year started.

Practitioners of tourism industry urged to charge fair rates

Accra, Feb. 5, GNA - The Ghana Tourism Society (GTS) has appealed to stakeholders in the tourism industry, especially private companies that have enjoyed tax rebates and exemptions to ensure that their prices and rates were commensurate to their services. The Society said all those who had enjoyed tax exemptions and duty-free incentives from the Ghana Investments Promotions Council (GIPC) should ensure that they kept their prices low and competitive to encourage more tourists into the country. Mr Ernest W. Owusu, President of the Ghana Tourism Society, in a release copied to the GNA Sports, said the gesture would go a long way in boosting the nation's tourism sector especially following the presence of a large number of visitors and football fans for the Ghana 2008 soccer tournament. He reminded all private entrepreneurs, corporate bodies and service providers, including hotels and car rental companies, tour operators and entertainment centres in the hospitality industry that the exemptions was to ensure that Ghana became competitive and affordable leisure holiday destination.

I "went on strike" with Broadway...

The theaters let this happen and considering it's the holiday season it's a bad move on their part.

At least I got to spend a lot of time talking to John Lloyd Young! I had met him once before and he remembered me... he's so nice. I feel so bad that he's not going to spend his last few weeks with Jersey Boys performing. I also got to hang out with Lance Bass (who is friends with my sister and I have met him before as well). He's such a sweetheart and I love him! So, I hung around with the cast and crew of both shows for several hours. Everyone seemed to be enjoying eachothers company, visiting with the people across the street. I hope this gets cleared up soon but some people said it could even last until christmas.

More snow came down and it was bitter cold last week, then the temperature went way up. Winter isn't over yet. It just seems natural to have a major storm around the middle of March. However, March did come in like a lion, so according to tradition, it should go out like a lamb. We'll just have to see what happens. No one controls the weather -- God is in charge of that.A variety of soups were served Monday evening at the Full Gospel Church at Jerusalem Corners. Reminders were sent to him on November 22, 2004, December 16, 2004, February 11, 2005 and March 29, 2005 but he failed to submit the same. His reply dated April 19 was received only on April 29, three days before the report appeared.

Thus, there was no delay on the part of the Customs Department. His case is now in the process of adjudication by the competent authority by following the due process of law.
