Tax swaps, dumb fixes, drought

One area where Republicans under the Gold Dome promise to make important strides is education. The majority should most assuredly pass State Sen. Eric Johnson's SB 458, which would give vouchers to parents of students in chronically failed schools and in a system that loses accreditation. The latter may include Clayton County. The Senate should pass, too, Rep. Jan Jones' House Bill 881, which would give charter school organizers a state-level way around foot-dragging, kill-the-competition local school boards and would make it clear that the money follows the child. Local control means parents, not another level of government.

State Rep. John Lunsford (R-McDonough) has a fine idea, too. His House Bill 854, filed last year to deal with financial information that unions would be required to file, has been amended.

Jaime Castillo: Car rental industry backs off promise to try to ...

After previously threatening to spend $1 million to fight the upcoming venue-tax election, the car rental industry has decided to sit it out after all.

"We're not going to fight, in any kind of public sense, the referendum," said Patrick Farrell, a St. Louis-based Enterprise Rent-A-Car spokesman who commented Monday on behalf of a coalition of national rental car tax opponents.

The news is a major boost to the efforts of Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, who is leading an establishment push to extend the tax on hotel rooms and car rentals that was used to build the AT&T Center.

If approved by voters on May 10, the $415 million package of four referendums would pay for various public projects. They would include amateur sports fields, a performing arts center, river enhancements and future improvements at the AT&T Center.

Chapter SIX Settling In

I know, too, that you have to put up with my Pittsburgh accent that sneaks through once in awhile.)"

But more substantial matters kept the bishop in the news as his first year in Rhode Island unfolded.

In September 2005, a judge sentenced a Rhode Island priest to prison for raping two altar boys several years before Bishop Tobin's tenure. "While this brings the legal proceedings to an end, the process of healing deep wounds that remain must continue," the bishop said in a statement. "This has been a difficult situation for all the parties involved. I offer my prayers for all who have suffered the pain of such abuse and renew my commitment to do everything I can to protect young people from such harm."

In October, the bishop launched his Keep the Heat On campaign, which assists low-income families in paying for their oil, gas and electricity.

IndyCar pit crew member also a mechanic

On March 29th, racing fans will be out in full force at the HomesteadMiami Speedway for the opener of the IndyCar series, which features the same cars and drivers that will race in the Indy500.

The crowd will be roaring, the drivers revving their engines and the announcers preparing to call the event. But on the sidelines, another group of people will be waiting for the race to begin: the pit crew.

Glen Van Alstyne is a member of the Panther Racing crew, based out of Indianapolis. During races, he serves as the inside rear-tire changer. His duties include not only changing the tire but also pushing the car out of the pit box and assisting with the starter if the car stalls.

''I can take the tire off and put a new one on in about 4.9 seconds,'' Van Alstyne said.

Suspects, 18 and 15, charged in carjacking

Two suspected Seattle gang members have been charged in connection with a drug-related carjacking on Mercer Island, according to court documents.

One defendant, Edmond Cummings, 18, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in King County Superior Court to second-degree robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm. He was being held in the King County Jail with bail set at $100,000.

The second defendant, a 15-year-old boy, pleaded not guilty last week in Juvenile Court to first-degree robbery and malicious mischief. The second charge pertains to an alleged tirade in an interrogation room at the Mercer Island Police Department, court documents say.

Mercer Island police started investigating Feb. 1 when a resident called 911 to report that several associates had threatened him with a gun and had stolen his 1999 Ford Explorer outside his apartment in the 3200 block of West Concord Way.
