Taking control: The do's and don'ts of battling weeds
Before shopping for an herbicide, identify the weed and determine why the weed has become a problem. Are you mowing at the correct height and removing no more than one-third of the height? Perhaps the grass is stressed from foot traffic, shade or too much water as a result of over-irrigation? A healthy lawn can keep weeds from becoming established, but this involves following good cultural practices. Examine mowing, water and fertilization practices to combat weed problems. When selecting an herbicide, read the fine print on the label to make sure it's safe to use on your lawn and will control your specific weed problem. Now is not a good time to apply weed and feed products because it's too early to fertilize lawns. Wait until the grass shows signs of new growth and then apply a good- quality fertilizer to the lawn.

Stanford center goes to press to battle poverty
Grusky says Pathways magazine will be able to participate in what he calls a "smart" war on poverty, since there is increasingly more and better data due to breakthroughs in computing, information analysis and data retrieval. "We know what works," he said, "and what doesn't." Based on the data, there is some agreement about what succeeds, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, which benefits lower-income workers. Among the programs widely considered to have failed are inner-city housing projects, which have only further marginalized the poor. Grusky, 49, a third-generation sociologist, grew up in Los Angeles, where his father has long taught organizational sociology at UCLA. His grandfather was a professor of sociology at Harvard University. He had no intention of following in their footsteps when he went off to Reed College in Portland, Ore.
Judge Dismisses Challenge To Internet Gambling Ban
The industry group had argued that the law was unconstitutional on many fronts, including freedom of speech and invasion of privacy concerns. It wanted the court to declare that people should be allowed to gamble from the privacy of their own homes. "You're looking at a law criminalizing an activity online that is legal off-line in 48 of the 50 states," said Joe Brennan Jr., the group's chairman. "If I have that right off-line in the real world, I should have that right online." In dismissing the group's challenge to the law, the judge did not get involved in whether the law should have been passed. "The plaintiff's claims express a fundamental disagreement with Congress's judgment that Internet gambling should be controlled legislatively, and pose questions as to whether (the law) ...
Redbuds on hillsides and in book
Every time I rested my back, which is more often these days, I cast my eyes on the hillside and enjoyed the bounty of millions of rich blossoms of redbuds. Redbuds are thick here in the valley and on into Craig County each April and May. Their dark pink to purple flowers cling to leafless limbs looking a good bit like pea blossoms. Indeed, the plant is a member of the pea family. When my fried Leonard Adkins wrote his wonderful “Wildflowers of the Appalachian Trail," published in 1999, it became an instant guidebook favorite of mine, but I mercilessly chastised him for leaving out redbuds. Adkins fought back, saying redbuds were a bush or tree, not a wildflower. Bush or tree -- call it what you wish -- Adkins newest wildflower guide embraces redbuds.
